Useful public transport? Yes please.

Here’s a piece from Salon on the “the battle for mass transit’s soul”. It seems that in transit circles Jarrett Walker and Darrin Nordahl are household names, albeit at opposite ends of the “should public mass transit be fun or useful” spectrum (which I’d never even heard about previously). Walker stresses the need for transit to get people from where they are to where they need to be, while Nordahl seems to think mass transit needs to be “compelling” and “move you emotionally as well as physically”. Clearly public transportation should be clean and so on, but beyond that, my priority is definitely to get from one place to another in as effective a manner as possible. (Doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate the beauty of the Moscow Metro, but then again, it does carry some 9 million passengers a day.)
