A while back I wrote about the Amtrak writers’ residency programme. It wasn’t quite a programme yet then, but now has become an official one – Amtrak will send up to 24 writers on overnight journeys on their trains across America. A great little scheme. And which, according to The Atlantic Cities, is going to cost a whopping $21,600 if all 24 writers end up going on the most expensive ticket. And so obviously that is terrible. Waste of public funds. At least that’s what senators Tom Coburn of Oklahoma and Jeff Flake of Arizona seem to think, and have written to Amtrak about.
I think the two senators are a waste of space. And funds. Full stop.
